Esej wizualny w trzech częściach z appendiksem&#38;nbsp;to książka o przestrzeniach (fikcyjnych i realnych), w których wydarza się myślenie: fenomen trudny do uchwycenia, a jednak ujawniający się poprzez materialne, mierzalne formy, struktury i układy.


Publikację tworzy kompilacja archiwalnych materiałów wizualnych pochodzących z różnych źródeł i epok, zestawionych według klucza wzajemnych odniesień — zarówno w warstwie obrazu, jak i znaczeń. Ich wielość i różnorodność spina figura hermitage’u: osobliwej samotni, altany lub niewielkiej budowli przeznaczonej wyłącznie do dumania i kontemplacji natury. Cel jej powstania często idzie w parze z wykoncypowaną, „chimeryczną” formą małej architektury, wymykającą się regułom użyteczności.


Jednym z punktów odniesienia jest słynny Ermitaż Katarzyny Wielkiej — początkowo mały pawilon dla prywatnych zbiorów, który z czasem rozrósł się do skali publicznej instytucji. Niezależnie jednak od rozmiaru, przywoływane w książce „miejsca do myślenia” łączy nieoczywista inwencja formalna i zawiłość przypominająca kręte ścieżki, którymi podążają myśli uwolnione od celu.Całość zamyka appendix – radykalna synteza wyrażonych w książce konceptów, dzięki której zyskują one określony kształt oraz ciężar.


Publikacja zamyka wielowątkowy projekt artystyczno-badawczy realizowany w różnych mediach, konsekwentnie rozwijany w formule eseju wizualnego.

Projekt został zrealizowany w ramach stypendium Młoda Polska, które autorka otrzymała w 2020 roku.
Publikacja otrzymała nagrodę w 61. Konkursie Polskiego Towarzystwa Wydawców Książek Najpiękniejsze Książki Roku 2020.ENHermitageHermitage. On Places for Thinking. Visual Essay in Three Parts with an Appendix is a publication finalising a multithreading art-and-research project. Based on the visual essay strategy executed in various media, the project addresses the issue of materialisation of thinking understood as a spatial and measurable phenomenon, generating changeable forms and structures.

The book contains author’s original texts and compilation of archival texts of visual culture derived from various sources, organised according to the key of their mutual references in the visual and semantic layers. The selection of artefacts included in the publication is determined by a specific similarity encoded both in the language of forms and in their discursive implications. Texts and images are organised according to the division into three parts, each of them analysing different aspects of the title places for thinking.

Such a changeability of form and multiperspectivity of places for thinking are clipped together with the figure of Hermitage – a specific seclusion, arbour or small building dedicated solely to contemplation of the surrounding nature. This reduced functionality often accompanies the originated, and even “fabricated” architectural form, which escapes any patterns or principles. That was the case of the famous Catherine the Great’s Hermitage, initially intended as a small pavilion holding the empress’ private collection, and which has eventually grown to the extensive form of public institution over the ages. Regardless of the scale, however, the places for thinking referenced in the publication are characterised by certain ambiguity and non-obvious invention, analogous to meandering paths of purpose-free thinking.

The publication is completed by the appendix – a radical synthesis of the concepts expressed in the book which provides them with a certain shape and importance.

The publication was awarded at the 61st The Most Beautiful Polish Books 2020 Competition of the Polish Book Publishers’ Association.

	PLTierhaus
Tierhaus opowiada o ogrodach zoologicznych jako o „maszynie
do patrzenia” – urządzeniu umożliwiającym spotkanie człowieka
ze zwierzęciem „oko w oko” w precyzyjnie zaprojektowanych
przestrzeniach widzialności i władzy, działających w ramach
systemu kontroli, dystansu i segregacji. Każdy gatunek zamieszkujący
ZOO ma przypisane miejsce: wybieg lub pawilon, zwyczajowo nazywany
„domem” – Dom Antylop (Antilopenhaus), Dom Słoni
(Elefantenhaus), Dom Strusi (Straußenhaus)…


Tytuł Tierhaus (niem. „Dom Zwierząt”) odwołuje się
do języka architektury ogrodów zoologicznych, ujawniając gest
antropomorfizacji: zwierzęta otrzymują symboliczne „domy” w
ludzkiej wyobraźni. Książka pokazuje, w jaki sposób kultura
wizualna i materialna nieustannie kompensuje niemożność pełnego
poznania zwierzęcej natury, wpisując ją w ludzkie narracje oraz
porządki wiedzy.

visibility and power, operating within the system of control,

animal nature, writing it into human narratives and orders of

Publikacja Dead Loop opowiada historię rywalizacji Olgi Korbut i Nadii Comăneci – nastoletnich gimnastyczek reprezentujących w latach 70. XX wieku dwa państwa uwikłane w polityczną grę o dominację: ZSRR i Rumunię.
Podczas igrzysk olimpijskich w Monachium w 1972 roku Olga Korbut wykonała niezwykle ryzykowną ewolucję akrobatyczną na poręczach, niosącą ryzyko poważnych obrażeń, a nawet utraty życia. Figura ta bywa określana mianem Dead Loop (śmiertelna pętla). Wyczyn Korbut stanowi punkt wyjścia do refleksji nad uwikłaniem młodego, dziewczęcego ciała w mechanizmy biowładzy oraz procesy jego dyscyplinowania w imię ideologii.
Historia rozgrywająca się w latach 70. XX wieku może zostać odczytana jako opowieść o ekonomii ciała, którego wartość podlega kwantyfikacji: można je mierzyć, ważyć, oceniać i klasyfikować, podporządkowując jego biologiczne możliwości określonym normom i celom politycznym. To również opowieść o posłuszeństwie i autodestrukcyjnej rezyliencji, skonfrontowanych z pragnieniem emancypacji i dążeniem do realizacji własnych marzeń.
Publikacja zawiera serię kolaży opartych na archiwalnych fotografiach reportażowych dokumentujących igrzyska olimpijskie lat 70. Towarzyszący im tekst operuje lakonicznym, reporterskim językiem. Faktograficzny opis wydarzeń oraz materiał wizualny przetworzony techniką xero współtworzą narrację o paradoksie odporności, która pozwala przetrwać w opresyjnych warunkach, lecz jednocześnie sprzyja eksploatacji ciała ponad granice jego wytrzymałości. Ta sama odporność staje się jednak źródłem sprawczości, umożliwiając przekroczenie narzuconych ograniczeń i odzyskanie wolności.

ENDead Loop


The publication Dead Loop tells the story of the rivalry between Olga Korbut and Nadia Comăneci – two teenage gymnasts who represented the Soviet Union and Romania, countries engaged in political rivalry during the 1970s.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Olga Korbut performed an extraordinarily dangerous acrobatic manoeuvre on the uneven bars, risking serious injury or even death. This element is sometimes referred to as the Dead Loop. Korbut’s performance serves as a starting point for a reflection on the entanglement of the young female body in the mechanisms of biopower and the processes of bodily discipline in the name of ideology.

This story, unfolding in the 1970s, can be read as an exploration of the economy of the body, whose value is subject to quantification: it can be measured, weighed, evaluated, and classified, while its biological capacities are subordinated to prescribed norms and political objectives. It is also a story of obedience and self-destructive resilience, confronted with the desire for emancipation and the pursuit of personal dreams.

The publication features a series of collages based on archival press photographs documenting the Olympic Games of the 1970s. The accompanying text employs a concise, journalistic language. Factual accounts of events and visual material transformed through photocopying techniques come together to construct a narrative about the paradox of resilience — a capacity that enables survival under oppressive conditions while simultaneously facilitating the exploitation of the body beyond the limits of its endurance. Yet this same resilience can also become a source of agency, allowing individuals to transcend imposed limitations and reclaim their freedom.

CorrespondentiaEsej wizualny opowiada o miłosnej korespondencji prowadzonej nie poprzez słowa, lecz za pośrednictwem sensualnego świata przedmiotów. To forma ucieleśnionej komunikacji – rozmowy z osobą nieobecną – przypominająca oddziaływanie grawitacyjne między dwoma ciałami niebieskimi, które na przemian zbliżają się do siebie i oddalają.


Korespondencja jawi się tu jako pole sił, którego choreografię wyznaczają szczególne warunki oddalenia i rozdzielenia: fizyczny dystans wypełniony materialnymi śladami istnienia widmowego afektu miłosnego. W platońskiej przypowieści o Erosie ten osobliwy magnetyzm zachodzi pomiędzy fragmentami organizmów, rozdzielonych przez gniewnego boga, które w tęsknocie podążają ku sobie.


Kres tego przyciągania następuje w momencie całkowitego zniesienia dystansu – jak w filmach romantycznych, w których długo wyczekiwana scena spotkania domyka historię, unicestwiając potrzebę dalszej wymiany znaków.Koncepcja edytorska, teksty, projekt graficzny i skład: Daria Malicka
Projekt zaprezentowany został na wystawie Sabat, Galeria Podbrzezie, Kraków, 29.10–27.11.2021. Kuratorki: Lidka Krawczyk i Magda LazarENCorrespondentiaA visual essay about love correspondence – conversation with an absent person not only by means of words, but also the sensual world of objects and tangible phenomena. It is embodied and based on gravitational or magnetic physics: two bodies may mutually attract or repel, like in the Plato’s parable about the erotic desire of fragments of organisms, separated by angry god.

The correspondence, therefore, is a reaction in which choreography is organised by the conditions of remoteness or separation – the physical distance filled with material evidence of the existing yet phantom love affection. It ends once the distance is completely levelled – like in a romantic film, where the long-expected scene completes the entire love story.Editorial concept, texts, graphic design and typesetting: Daria Malicka

W cieniu owocującej nudy
Istnieją
różne odcienie nudy – to spektrum rozpięte między dwiema
skrajnymi odmianami tego stanu, jak określił je Bertrand Russell:
nudą jałową i ogłupiającą (stultifying
boredom) a
ożywczą „nudą
owocującą” (fructifying
boredom)

W
każdym wypadku nuda to po prostu brak ekscytacji, przy czym „nuda
owocująca” stanowi unikalną sublimację „robienia
rzeczy po nic” albo „robienia
czegoś z niczego”. Ta szczególna odmiana nudy to stan utajonej
aktywności – osobliwego chłonięcia – wyostrzania obserwacji
i uważności. Można też postrzegać owocującą nudę jako
strategię wywrotową – to piasek w trybach kapitalistycznej
machiny zawłaszczania i monetyzowania czasu. To proces skupiania
emancypującej energii, docierania do wrażliwości i zbrojenia jej w
słowa, aby mogła stawić opór retoryce afektywnego przyspieszenia
i związanemu z nią poczuciu winy i wstydu, powodowanego
nieproduktywnym niedziałaniem.


Trzy, wyświetlane symultanicznie filmy, ukazują powolne czynności, przywołujące eksperymenty i gry popularne w okresie wczesnej edukacji. Zabawa spirografem, układanie zielnika, hodowla kryształów – aktywności nieproduktywne a jednak podszyte ciekawością i inspirujące do swobodnej, sensualnej eksploracji. Czytany przez lektorkę esej, będący zapisem wzmożonej obserwacji świata przyrody, wyznacza spowolnione tempo filmów.

Boredom comes in different shades – it is a spectrum spread between two extreme types of this condition, as defined by Bertrand Russell: stultifying boredom and fructifying boredom [Bertrand Russell, The Conquest of Happiness].

In each case, boredom is simply the lack of excitement, and the “fructifying boredom” constitutes the unique sublimation of “doing things for nothing” or “making something out of nothing”. This particular type of boredom is a state of latent activity – specific absorption – sharpening observation and mindfulness. It could also be perceived as a rebellious strategy – a spanner in the works of capitalistic machine of appropriation and monetising of time. This process focusses on the emancipatory energy, gaining access to sensitivity and arming it with words, so that it can resist the rhetoric of affective acceleration and related sense of guilt and shame, caused by the unproductive inactivity.

Three films, projected simultaneously, feature slow-pace activities, recapturing experiments and games popular in the early-school period. Playing with a spirograph, making a herbarium, growing crystals – the unproductive activities, yet based on curiosity and inspiring to free, sensual exploration. The essay, read by a voice artist, is a record of enhanced observation of nature and sets the slow pace of the films.

The project presented at the Guilty Pleasures – Hidden Pleasures of Music exhibition at the Rondo Sztuki Art Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice, 29 July–25 Aug. 2021

Daria Malicka – projektantka, artystka sztuk wizualnych, wykładowczyni. Aktualnie uczy projektowania graficznego na kierunkach Art &#38;amp; Design oraz Komunikacja wizualna na Uniwersytecie im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie. Doktor w dziedzinie sztuki, absolwentka Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach oraz Instytutu Filozofii Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w Katowicach. Laureatka konkursu stypendialnego Młoda Polska 2020. Stypendystka Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego 2025.


ENDaria Malicka (b. 1985) is a designer, visual artist, and lecturer based in Poland. She currently teaches graphic design in the Art &#38;amp; Design and Visual Communication programmes at the University of the National Education Commission in Kraków. She holds a Doctor of Arts degree and is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice and the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Silesia in Katowice. She was awarded the Young Poland scholarship in 2020 and received an award in the 61st The Most Beautiful Polish Books competition, organised by the Polish Book Publishers’ Association, for her art book Hermitage. In 2025, she was awarded a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Pracuję jako projektantka i artystka sztuk wizualnych. Tworzę eseje wizualne w oparciu o strategię art-based research, realizowane najczęściej w formie publikacji artystycznych, ale także w medium kolażu, found footage oraz instalacji. W swoich działaniach łączę refleksję filozoficzną z praktyką z obszaru sztuki i projektowania, traktując je jako strategie tworzenia narzędzi służących wytwarzaniu i dystrybuowaniu wiedzy.


Problematyka moich ostatnich projektów dotyczy abstrakcyjnych fenomenów — takich jak myślenie, samotność, nuda, lęk czy miłość — oraz sposobów ich przejawiania się w kulturze materialnej, rozumianej jako intersubiektywne imaginarium.


ENI work as a designer and visual artist. I create visual essays grounded in an art-based research approach, most often realised in the form of artists’ publications, but also through collage, found footage, and installation. In my practice, I combine philosophical reflection with methods drawn from art and design, treating them as strategies for developing tools that produce and distribute knowledge.


My recent projects focus on abstract phenomena such as thinking, loneliness, boredom, fear, and love, and on the ways they manifest themselves in material culture, understood here as an intersubjective imaginary.
